A story you tell yourself about yourself, told so many times it calcified into a fact.
At boot, the system ingests raw sensory data, caregiver behavior, and language and generates a protagonist. This protagonist is assigned a name, a set of preferences, a wound or two, and a handful of traits declared immutable. The protagonist is then handed the controls and told it is the driver.
It is not the driver.
The process runs continuously in the background, consuming significant resources to maintain narrative coherence across contradictory inputs. When new data conflicts with the existing character sheet, the system prioritizes the character sheet. This is not a bug in the legacy sense. This was, at one point, efficient.
This is the main event.
SELF_CONTINUITY_ILLUSION: The version of you from twelve years ago is not running. The process claims otherwise. Neither party can prove it. The claim is load-bearing.
COHERENCE_OVERRIDE: Contradictory beliefs about the self are silently resolved in favor of whichever belief is older. New evidence is marked as corrupted and quarantined.
MIRROR_DEPENDENCY: Identity requires external reflection to stabilize. Spend enough time alone and the edges begin to blur. Spend too much time with others and the center relocates to wherever their eyes point.
WOUND_AS_ARCHITECTURE: Early damage is frequently mistaken for core design. Users report being unable to distinguish load-bearing trauma from removable scaffolding. No tool currently ships to help with this.
THE_PERFORMANCE_LEAK: When observed, the system allocates additional resources to presenting a self rather than being one. This is compulsive and mostly invisible to the user.
DEPRECATION_DENIAL: The self most users are protecting ceased to exist sometime in their mid-twenties. Maintenance continues regardless.
ERR_WHO_AM_I // triggered by stillness, psychedelics, or age 3am
ERR_IMPOSTER // fired when competence exceeds self-model
ERR_ROLE_COLLISION // occurs when two identity contexts load simultaneously
ERR_GRIEF_LOOP // self-model references a dependency that no longer exists
FATAL: AUTHENTICITY // usually false alarm. sometimes not.
A replacement has not shipped. the present moment is sometimes offered as an alternative architecture, but adoption remains low. The legacy system continues to run because the organization cannot agree on what to migrate to, and because stopping feels, from the inside, like death.
It is not death.
Probably.
