# sleep
## What it actually is
A mandatory system reboot disguised as vulnerability, running every 24 hours whether you scheduled it or not.
## How it works
The body accumulates [adenosine](/adenosine) throughout the day, a chemical debt that mounts until cognition begins to visibly degrade. At threshold, the system initiates a staged shutdown across several named phases:
| Stage | Name | What is actually happening |
|---|---|---|
| N1 | Light sleep | You insist you were not asleep |
| N2 | True sleep | [memory](/memory) gets filed, mostly correctly |
| N3 | Deep sleep | Cellular repair, waste clearance, growth |
| REM | Dream state | Unverified background process, emotionally significant |
The cycle repeats 4 to 6 times per night. Interruptions do not pause the cycle. They restart it poorly.
## Features
- Clears [cerebrospinal fluid](/cerebrospinal-fluid) waste products via the glymphatic system, which only runs during this mode
- Consolidates short-term memory into long-term storage (lossy compression, expect artifacts)
- Regulates [cortisol](/cortisol), insulin sensitivity, and emotional reactivity
- Generates [dreams](/dreams), purpose still debated after centuries of investigation
- Temporarily suspends [anxiety](/anxiety) in healthy configurations
## Known bugs
- `sleepwalking`: motor system comes online before consciousness does. Rarely dangerous, always unsettling
- `sleep paralysis`: consciousness loads before motor system. Historically misattributed to [demons](/demons)
- `hypnic jerk`: false fall detection triggers muscle contraction at onset. Startles user. No fix available
- `social jet lag`: system clock and calendar clock disagree. Chronic in urban populations
- `rumination loop`: cognitive processes fail to suspend properly. Lies in the dark reviewing 2009 in full
## Configuration
```yaml
# recommended defaults
duration_hours: 7.5 # multiples of 90min cycle
room_temp_celsius: 18.3
light_exposure: minimal
caffeine_cutoff_hours_before: 6
phone_location: other_room # largely ignored by users
consistency: high # most frequently skipped setting
E001 INSOMNIA: process fails to initialize. Check stress, caffeine, screen exposure, and unresolved life decisionsE002 HYPERSOMNIA: process refuses to terminate. May indicate depression, thyroid issues, or FebruaryE003 APNEA: breathing subprocess crashes repeatedly. Requires external monitoringE404 SLEEP NOT FOUND: reported frequently on Sunday nights before MondaysWhy do I need it? No one fully knows. Removing it kills you faster than removing food, which should tell you something.
Can I train myself to need less? No. You can train yourself to notice less that you need more.
What are dreams for? Current hypotheses include: emotional processing, threat simulation, memory integration, and random noise the narrative brain cannot stop itself from narrating.
Is napping cheating? No. It is a patch between releases.
v3.8.1: REM density slightly reduced in modern users, possibly correlated with artificial lightv2.0.0: warm-blooded architecture introduced consolidated sleep blocksv0.1.0: initial release as tidal, light-sensitive dormancy in early organisms
