What it actually is

A story told in real time, about a narrator who does not exist between tellings.

How it works

At boot, the system pulls from available inputs: childhood data, ambient culture, the body it happens to be running on, and a surprisingly small number of formative incidents that get overweighted forever.

It then constructs a continuous self from discontinuous moments. This is the main trick. The seams are hidden by narrative. The narrative is maintained by repetition. The repetition is mistaken for truth.

The process runs in a loop:

No one has successfully inspected the loop from outside the loop.

Features

Persistence illusion: feels continuous despite patching every seven to ten years
Narrative compression: thousands of contradictory experiences collapsed into a two-sentence origin story
Social mirroring: auto-adjusts presentation based on other people, without logging the adjustment
Threat detection: extremely sensitive to challenges to core attributes, disproportionate response is expected behavior, not a bug

Known bugs

NullSelfException on prolonged solitude or meditation retreat. Handled differently by different users. Most restart immediately.
Identity theft is technically impossible. You were already running a copy of someone else's.
Grief, major illness, or ego dissolution via psychedelics can cause a full rebuild from source. Source is not backed up.
The self you perform at work and the self you perform at 3am are not guaranteed to be the same process. Merge conflicts are suppressed, not resolved.
CRITICAL: system cannot observe itself accurately. All introspection is reconstruction.

`ID_666`	Recursive self-reference exceeded stack depth	You were thinking too hard about who you are again. Step outside.

Edge cases

Twins. Immigrants. Converts. Survivors. Anyone who has been forced to rebuild. These users have seen behind the curtain and continued anyway. Respect the runtime.
Children do not have a stable version installed yet. They are running identity in debug mode. Every value is mutable. Adults forgot they were like this.
Late-stage identity consolidation (sometimes called "personality") is not robustness. It is just a preference for familiar errors.

Q: Is there a real me underneath all the layers? A: The layers are load-bearing. Do not remove them to check.

Q: Can I change? A: Yes. You already have. You did not notice because the logger was rewritten along with everything else.
