A story told in place of a thing, collected as if it were the thing.
Someone identifies a gap between what is visible and what is real. They step into that gap. They furnish it. They charge rent.
The mechanism is simple. Trust does the heavy lifting. Fraud borrows trust's credit score, makes several large purchases, and leaves before the statement arrives.
It runs in three phases:
"He seemed so certain. I thought certainty was proof."
When the fraud believes itself, the system enters an unhandled state. The deceiver becomes the deceived. There is no exception handler for this. It just runs until it doesn't.
When both parties silently agree not to name it, the fraud becomes a social contract. At this point it is reclassified as culture, policy, or tradition.

Is fraud always conscious? No. Some users inherit it. Some are running a fork they never audited.
What is the opposite of fraud? Unclear. Transparency is the obvious answer but often refuses to scale.
Does it end? It ends the way fire ends. When there is nothing left, or when someone finally throws water.
Why does it work so well? People do not want to believe they were wrong to trust. The fraudster rents that reluctance.
