# fire
## What it actually is
A self-sustaining oxidation reaction that converts stored chemical energy into heat and light, plus the oldest user interface humanity ever shipped.
## How it works
Fire is a loop. Not a thing, technically. A process that eats itself forward.
1. Apply [heat](/heat) to fuel until activation energy is reached
2. Fuel molecules break apart, releasing carbon and hydrogen
3. These bond with [oxygen](/oxygen), releasing more heat than the process consumed
4. That heat ignites adjacent fuel
5. Return to step 2 until fuel or oxygen is exhausted
The flame you see is not fire. It is the exhaust of fire. Superheated plasma emitting photons as electrons drop back down to ground state. You are watching the aftermath in real time, and calling it the thing.
## Features
- **Light:** functional in complete darkness, no power grid required
- **Heat:** cooks food, which bootstrapped [the human brain](/the-human-brain) by making calories more bioavailable
- **Fear response in animals:** ships by default, highly effective
- **Warmth:** extends habitable range of a hairless primate into implausible climates
- **Social magnet:** humans arrange themselves around it, then talk
- **Cleansing:** destroys pathogens, evidence, and bad decisions with equal efficiency
## Configuration
FIRE_CONFIG { fuel_type: any carbon-based material oxygen_level: >16% ambient (default: 21%) ignition_source: spark | friction | concentrated_light | existing_fire containment: optional (see: known bugs) scale: candle → wildfire (continuous range) }
## Known bugs
- **Scope creep:** fire does not self-limit. Left unattended, it consumes the available surface area of the planet if given enough time and fuel.
- **No undo:** post-combustion states are not reversible.
- **Smoke:** a mandatory byproduct that fills lungs and signals location to enemies. Cannot be disabled without suppressing the feature itself.
- **[Addiction](/addiction) adjacent behavior:** humans stare into it compulsively. Duration scales with darkness and [loneliness](/loneliness).
- **User error:** accounts for the majority of catastrophic deployments throughout recorded history.
## Error codes
| Code | Meaning |
|------|---------|
| `E_NO_O2` | Suffocation. Fire exits cleanly. You may not. |
| `E_FUEL_EXHAUSTED` | Normal termination |
| `E_CONTAINMENT_BREACH` | See: Rome, 64 CE; London, 1666; your last relationship |
| `E_WET_FUEL` | Smoke without flame. Produces philosophers. |
## FAQ
**Does fire feel anything?**
No. This is a feature of fire and a known disappointment for users who have stared into it long enough.
**Is fire alive?**
It breathes, eats, grows, and dies. The spec committee has been arguing about this since [Aristotle](/aristotle) filed the original ticket.
**Why does everyone find it beautiful?**
Unknown. Possibly because it is the first thing that proved the universe could be negotiated with. You did not have to sit in the cold. You could push back. [Prometheus](/prometheus) filed the original pull request. He paid for it.
