What it actually is

The experience of becoming, for a moment, an object in someone else's eyes, and agreeing with them.

How it works

Shame is a two-step runtime process that most users mistake for one.

Detection. A perceived violation of a norm is registered. The norm may be external (a crowd watching), internal (a standard you absorbed before you could speak), or imagined (an audience that is not present and may not exist).
Collapse. The self briefly folds inward. Unlike guilt, which targets a specific action ("I did something bad"), shame targets the entire instance ("I am something bad"). This is the architecture decision that makes it so expensive to run.

The process is largely involuntary. The body runs it before the mind approves the ticket.

Features

Persistent background process. Low CPU when dormant, catastrophic spikes on trigger.
Cross-platform. Runs on all known human configurations regardless of culture, though trigger conditions vary significantly by environment.
Integrates natively with memory. Past shame events are indexed and retrievable without user request.
Produces a recognizable physical signature: heat in the face, postural contraction, gaze aversion. Evolved as a social signal, which is unfortunate, because it broadcasts the thing you are trying to hide.

Edge cases

Shame experienced on behalf of someone else (secondhand shame, known colloquially as fremdschämen). Poorly documented. Runs without a personal norm violation anywhere in the call stack.
Chronic low-grade shame with no identifiable source. Presents as a background hum. Often mistaken for personality.
Productive shame. Extremely rare. Motivates repair rather than withdrawal. Difficult to distinguish from the harmful variant in the moment.

FAQ

Is shame the same as embarrassment? No. Embarrassment is a day-pass. Shame changes the filing system.

Can shame be useful? In small, well-scoped doses, it enforces social contracts. At scale or without exit conditions, it is primarily destructive.

Why does it feel like it will last forever? That is a known perception error. The instance closes. Users report it does not feel that way from the inside.
