What it actually is

The universe's only process that knows which direction it's going.

How it works

Everything tends toward its most probable state. The most probable state is: spread out, mixed up, lukewarm, quiet. This is not a preference. This is not a philosophy. This is a counting problem that the universe solved once and has been executing ever since.

Steps, roughly:

Order exists (briefly, locally, at great cost)
Order becomes available to disorder
Disorder accepts the offer
Repeat at every scale simultaneously

The system does not log warnings before step 3. There is no rollback.

Directional time: without entropy, time has no arrow. You're welcome.

Local reversibility illusion: your refrigerator appears to fight entropy. It does not. It exports entropy to the room. The room exports it to the building. The building to the city. The city to the atmosphere. You are not winning.

FAQ

Can I reverse it? Locally, temporarily, expensively. The bill is always paid somewhere else.

Is entropy bad? It enables fire, fermentation, memory, and the direction of causality. "Bad" is not a thermodynamic category.

Why does my room get messy on its own but never clean itself? This is not your room's fault. This is the second law. File no tickets.

Will it stop? It will stop when everything is the same temperature as everything else. At that point the question will also stop.
