Embarrassing Formative Period

What it actually is

The years during which you became yourself, using materials you would never consciously choose.

How it works

The system selects a window of approximately four to nine years. During this window, inputs arrive faster than the capacity to evaluate them. Social signals are treated as survival data. Identity is assembled from whatever is nearby: a friend group, a genre, a phase, a person who should not have had that much influence.

The resulting configuration is written directly to long-term storage. Compression is lossy. The cringe is lossless.

The period ends without announcement. You only learn it has ended when someone shows you a photo, or you find an old username, or you read something you wrote at fourteen and have to put the paper face-down and leave the room.

Known Bugs

This is the main event.

Memory leak: Specific moments replay without being called. A hallway. A lunch table. What you said and how the room changed. No patch has been issued.
Corrupted role models: The adults assigned to provide stable input were themselves running legacy builds with unresolved errors. This propagated.
Off-brand attachment: Bonded deeply to the wrong person, the wrong scene, the wrong idea of yourself. Attachment persists past the object.
Crash log preserved: The system did not delete evidence. The body kept the score. Old code surfaces during job interviews, first dates, funerals.
Misattributed causality: Concluded that specific personal failures were character flaws rather than environment bugs. This belief was compiled into later versions and is difficult to locate.
The photograph problem: Images exist. Social media has indexed some of them. Jurisdiction is unclear.
Silent installation of shame: Shame installed itself without prompting during this period and set itself to run on startup. Most users do not discover this until their thirties, in a therapist's office, describing something they had not thought about in years.

Edge Cases

Some users report accessing this period and finding it mostly fine. These users are either lying, still in it, or were raised in conditions so stable they do not understand what the rest of us are talking about. All three groups are regarded with suspicion.

v0.1–v0.5: Pre-verbal. Considered formative but non-embarrassing. Plausible deniability intact. v0.6–v0.12: Embarrassing but protected by childhood classification. v0.13–v0.17: Core release.
