Embarrassing Formative Period

What it actually is

A mandatory runtime environment in which a person assembles a self from whatever materials are locally available, most of which are bad.

How it works

The process initializes somewhere between ages 11 and 22, though late deployments are documented. The subject encounters a gap between who they are and who they want to be and fills it with provisional materials: a borrowed aesthetic, a parasocial attachment to a band or author, an online persona, a philosophy summarized from a single Wikipedia article, strong opinions about films they watched once.

The period runs in the background. The subject usually cannot observe it clearly until it is already over, at which point the logs become visible and the cringe response activates retroactively.

It terminates. Eventually. The outputs persist.

Identity scaffolding: builds load-bearing structures that remain in the final architecture, even if the scaffolding looks embarrassing in photographs

Edge cases

Some users never fully deprecate the period. They continue running v1.0 modules in production. This is more common than reported.
Occasionally, the embarrassing period produces something genuinely good: a creative obsession, a lifelong friendship, a skill acquired for the wrong reasons.
In rare cases, the subject attempts to skip the period entirely. The skipped content is deferred, not deleted. It surfaces later with compounded interest.

FAQ

Can it be deleted? No. It is write-once storage. You can stop referencing it, but the data remains.

Is everyone's equally bad? No. Some people had the internet during theirs. Severity varies accordingly.

Does it matter in the long run? The period is less about what you believed and more about the fact that you were willing to believe something. That part transfers.
