The universe's quietest insistence that you stay.
A pressure differential is created in the chest cavity. Air moves in. The lungs extract what they need. The rest is returned, slightly warmer and richer in carbon dioxide, to the world you borrowed it from. Repeat approximately 20,000 times per day. You will not remember most of them.
The process is managed by a background daemon you did not install and cannot uninstall. It runs without your attention. It also accepts manual override, which is unusual for something this important.
| Condition | Behavior |
|---|---|
| High altitude | Performance degrades. Acclimatization required. |
| Underwater | Suspended. Resume on surface. |
| Asthma | Throttled. Requires third-party plugin. |
| Sleep | Handed off to overnight process. Usually fine. |
| First breath (birth) | Cold start. Loud. Remarkable. |
| Last breath | Graceful shutdown. No error thrown. |

Do I need to think about it? No. It will run without you. But every now and then, paying attention to it is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself.
Why does it change when I'm scared? The nervous system is trying to help. It has access to ancient data. It does not always know the threat has passed.
What is a deep breath actually doing? Slowing time slightly. Activating the parasympathetic system. Signaling to the body: still here. Still okay. It is a small thing that works.
Is it connected to consciousness? Closer than most processes get. Breathing is one of the few places the voluntary and involuntary meet. You can follow it in. Meditators have known this longer than medicine has.
