Identity Formation

What it actually is

A process by which a consciousness stitches together a "self" from scraps of other people's expectations, survival responses, and vibes, then insists the result was always there.

How it works

Roughly. Very roughly.

Receive input from environment (caregivers, mirrors, cruelty, boredom)
Internalize a subset of inputs as "me"
Reject other inputs as "not me" (suppressed to /self/shadow/, see Carl Jung)
Narrate a continuous self across time despite catastrophic evidence of discontinuity
Repeat until death or significant psychotherapy

The process is recursive and has no documented exit condition. It calls itself from within itself. This is considered normal and not a bug by maintainers, who are also running the same process and cannot be trusted to evaluate it objectively.

SIGKILL_RECEIVED        Major loss. System attempting graceful restart.

Edge Cases

Identical twins: two instances, one source repo, completely divergent builds. Neither is the copy.
Adolescence: mandatory full system audit with no documentation and no rollback.
Immigration: forced context switch mid-process. All locale settings become ambiguous.
Enlightenment: rumored state in which process recognizes it is a process. Unverified. May itself be an identity.

FAQ

Q: When does identity formation finish? A: Filed under known bugs. See ID-404.

Q: Is my identity "real"? A: It is running. Whether "real" is the right predicate is a question identity formation itself cannot answer, because it is the thing asking.

Q: Can I change it? A: Yes. This will feel like dying. It is not dying. Probably.
