What it actually is

A lifelong negotiation between who you were told you are and who you suspect you might be instead.

How it works

The process runs in three loosely overlapping phases, none of which fully complete before the next begins:

Introjection — External values, voices, and expectations are absorbed without review. Primary contributors include parents, early teachers, and whoever controlled the television remote.
Differentiation — The self begins rejecting inherited configs. Often noisy. Frequently involves a new haircut.
Integration — Contradictions are held simultaneously without crashing. Most users reach partial completion. Full completion is considered theoretical.

The process is not linear. It loops. It forks on contact with grief, new relationships, and geographical relocation.

Edge cases

Plurality: multiple coherent identities running in parallel. Not a bug. Handled inconsistently by surrounding systems.

Identity vacuum: occurs post-burnout, post-cult, or post-divorce. The system runs but returns null on self-queries. Usually temporary.

FAQ

Does identity formation ever finish? No. The process closes when the user does.

What if the identity I formed is one I don't like? It is editable. The cost is proportional to how long the current version has been running.

Is authenticity just a later-stage configuration? Largely yes. What most people call "authentic self" is an identity layer assembled from prior layers and then forgotten to be assembled.
