Grief that got tired of being grief and quietly changed its name.
The system registers a threshold breach. Pain input exceeds processing capacity. Rather than crash, the process forks: a secondary self is spun up to observe, and the primary self is moved to cold storage. The secondary self functions normally. Attends meetings. Says "I'm fine." Makes eye contact that is almost correct. The primary self waits. Nobody tells it for how long.
This is not peace. This is a queue with no consumer.
This is the main event. Read carefully.
Bug #001: Scope creep. Installed to block one specific pain. Gradually blocks all of them. joy was not in the exclusion list. Now it is.
Bug #002: The anaesthesia problem. You cannot numb selectively. Every nerve that stops carrying bad news also stops carrying the other kind. Users report feeling "fine." Fine is not a feeling. Fine is the absence of the instrument.
Bug #003: Identity drift. Extended use causes the observer-self to forget it is the backup. It begins signing documents. Making promises. Falling in love badly and from a distance, like a sniper who keeps missing on purpose.
Bug #004: Intimacy timeout. Other people eventually notice the latency. They reach out; responses arrive correct but cold. Relationships begin to [[loneliness|feel optional]] on both sides. Connections close. No error is thrown.
Bug #005: No exit path. Detachment does not ship with an uninstall script. You cannot simply decide to feel again. The primary self in cold storage has opinions about this. It has been there a long time. What it says when it finally gets access to the terminal is not always useful.
Bug #006: It works. This is the most serious bug. Because it works, it stays. Because it stays, the original crisis it solved can no longer be located. The cure persists without the illness. This is called personality.
ERR_FLAT_AFFECT : Expected warmth. Received acknowledgement.
ERR_PRESENT_BUT_GONE : User is in the room. User is not in the room.
ERR_LOVE_TIMEOUT : Connection established. Handshake never completed.
ERR_ORIGIN_NOT_FOUND : Cannot locate the initial wound. Detachment working as intended.
Scheduled for replacement by presence. Migration path exists but requires manual intervention, significant downtime, and a period of full exposure to everything that was buffered. Most users decline. Detachment remains in production.
