What it actually is

A membrane that grew back wrong after repeated punctures, now mistaken for peace.

How it works

Something happens. Probably grief, or a smaller grief that compounded like interest.
The nervous system files a ticket: this is too much.
The ticket is never resolved. Instead, a workaround is deployed.
The workaround becomes the default config.
You watch yourself from a mild distance. Like a documentary about someone you used to know.

Features

Noise reduction: External drama arrives pre-muffled. Social crises feel like weather happening to someone else's city.
Reduced latency on hard decisions: Easier to end things when things don't fully land.
Compatibility with productivity: Highly functional in professional contexts. Totally invisible at a standup meeting.
Low power mode: Requires less from intimacy because intimacy is running in a sandboxed environment anyway.

Edge cases

Sometimes detachment is correct. Buddhists have been debugging this for centuries and their notes are inconclusive.
In high-chaos environments, detachment is a feature. In stable ones, it is a delayed explosion.
You can be detached from your detachment. This is called a stack overflow of the self. There is no catch block.

FAQ

Is this the same as dissociation? Cousins. Detachment rents a room in the same building. Dissociation owns the building and changed the locks.

Can it be patched? Yes. Patch notes include: sustained attention, one person who stays anyway, time measured in small moments rather than outcomes. Rollout is slow. Adoption is optional and frightening.
