Cortisol

What it actually is

A glucocorticoid steroid hormone that was designed to save your life once every few weeks and is now running continuously in the background like a forgotten process eating 90% of your RAM.

How it works

The system follows a simple trigger chain:

The amygdala detects a threat. Any threat. A lion. A passive-aggressive email. A sound in the house at 2am.
Signal routed to hypothalamus. No fact-checking performed at this stage. None was ever planned.
Adrenal glands receive the memo and secrete cortisol into bloodstream.
Blood sugar spikes. Heart rate climbs. Digestion pauses. Immune response deprioritized.
You are now ready to fight or flee a predator that is not there.
Repeat every 45 minutes for the rest of your life.

Known Bugs

This is the main event.

Threat model is broken. The system cannot distinguish a charging predator from a mortgage. Both trigger full deployment. The adrenal glands do not read context.
No automatic shutoff. Under chronic activation, the off-switch degrades. The system learns to idle at high output. This is called anxiety.
Immunosuppression during sustained load. Extended stress tells the body to deprioritize healing. You get sick when things finally calm down. The body is not on your side here.
Memory writes are biased. Cortisol preferentially burns threatening experiences into long-term storage. Pleasant afternoons, largely lost. The argument from 2009, crystal clear.
Hippocampal atrophy. Prolonged exposure literally shrinks the structure responsible for learning and spatial memory. The cure for a bad environment is structural brain damage.
Sleep interference. Elevated evening cortisol suppresses melatonin. Poor sleep raises cortisol. The loop is intentional only in the sense that evolution never needed you to survive past 40.
Weight redistribution. Chronic cortisol signals the body to store fat centrally. Around the organs. For quick energy access. That is the polite way to describe it.
Inflammation paradox. Designed to reduce short-term inflammation. On a long timeline, chronic cortisol resistance produces more inflammation. The drug becomes the disease.

Cortisol has not been deprecated because no replacement has been developed. Users are advised to manage their environments to reduce invocation frequency.
