--- name: Your Subconscious slug: your-subconscious type: cognitive_subsystem status: running version: varies_by_host released: approximately conception maintainer: unknown (suspected: [evolution](/evolution)) dependencies: - nervous_system - memory - fear - desire - sleep license: proprietary (you do not own it) tags: - cognition - psychology - background_process - unstoppable - yours_but_not_really ---
A process you did not install, cannot quit, and will never have root access to.
Runs continuously beneath the conscious layer, which is the part of you reading this sentence and feeling vaguely proud of itself. The subconscious ingests everything: the smell of a hallway from 1994, the way someone almost reached for your hand but did not, background sounds during a panic attack, a song your parent hummed without knowing they were teaching you anything.
It does not label these inputs. It files them.
Later, when you make a "rational decision," it has already voted. You received the memo as a gut feeling. You ignored the memo. This is normal. This is fine. This is why you are in this situation.
The subconscious communicates primarily through:
| Feature | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern recognition | Stable | Faster than conscious thought by ~500ms |
| Threat modeling | Overactive | Calibrated for a world that no longer exists |
| Desire management | Undocumented | Often works against stated user goals |
| Memory compression | Lossy | Keeps feelings, discards facts |
| Intrusive thoughts | Cannot be disabled | See Known Bugs |
# You cannot edit this file directly.
# Attempts via journaling: partial effect
# Attempts via therapy: recommended, slow
# Attempts via alcohol: writes to the config, corrupts the read
threat_sensitivity: high # default, nearly universal
attachment_style: ask your therapist
repression_level: 0.0 to 1.0 # you know which end you are on
dream_verbosity: symbolic # cannot be set to plain
Can I access it directly? No. Some users report progress through meditation, somatic work, or sustained creative practice. This is not access. This is negotiation.
Is it trying to hurt me? No. It is trying to protect a version of you that may no longer exist. It is loyal to a fault. That is the fault.
Why does it keep bringing up that one thing? It believes you have not looked at it yet. It is probably right.
Deprecation is not scheduled. The subconscious predates your conscious identity and will likely outlast your certainty about who you are. Updates occur during sleep without user consent. This is considered a feature by the maintainer and a bug by everyone else.
