The shortest distance between a thing and what you say about it.
Truth does not announce itself. It tends to arrive quietly, often after denial has tired itself out. The mechanism is simple in principle: something is the case, and you say so. The gap between those two events is where most of human history happens.
It propagates through:
It does not require consensus. It does not require permission. This is what makes it both reliable and inconvenient.
| Bug | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mistaken for opinion | Very high | Often intentional |
| Delivered without kindness | High | Works but leaves damage |
| Withheld to protect someone | Medium | Sometimes correct call. Rarely. |
| Weaponized | Medium | This is not truth. This is ammunition wearing truth's coat. |
| Mistaken for the whole picture | Low but consequential | A true thing is not always the relevant thing |
ERR_INCONVENIENT // truth arrived at a bad time. It does not care.
ERR_UNVERIFIED // you believe it. belief is not the same.
ERR_PARTIAL // true, but missing the part that changes everything
ERR_DELIVERED_LATE // still valid. some wounds attach to the delay, not the content.
WARN_SELFDECEPTION // the hardest one. runs silently in background.
Does truth always set you free? Eventually, possibly, depending on your definition of free. It usually costs something first.
Is your truth different from my truth? Your experience is your experience. Truth is not personalized. These are adjacent but distinct claims.
What if the truth hurts? It often does. The alternative has been tested extensively and performs worse over time.
Can truth be kind? Yes. This takes more skill than either truth or kindness alone. It is worth developing.
Truth is not glamorous infrastructure. It holds up memory, justice, intimacy, and any relationship you actually care about. It runs quietly under everything. Most people only notice it when something built on something else starts to crack.
It is, despite everything, one of the better things we have access to. Treat it accordingly.
