Small Talk

What it actually is

Language wearing a coat it doesn't own, standing near the door, asking about your commute.

How it works

Two people occupy the same air. Neither wants silence, which has weight. So words are placed, light as receipts, into the space between them. The words are not for meaning. They are for proof: I am here, I mean no harm, I too have noticed the weather.

The protocol is:

Open with environment. Temperature. Traffic. The soup.
Receive. Match cadence. Add nothing sharp.
Linger just long enough.
Exit on a wish. "Take care." "Have a good one." "Stay dry."

No conclusions are reached. That is the point.

Features

Low latency. Boots in one syllable.
Fault tolerant. Survives mispronunciation, half-attention, forgotten names.
Stateless. Each session begins fresh. Prior conversations not cached.
Universally parseable. Works across most cultures with minor localization.
Doubles as loneliness management without naming loneliness.

Known bugs

Occasionally misfires into vulnerability. No rollback available.
Some users enter recursive loops. How are you / Fine how are you / Fine how are you.
Depth can leak in. A stranger on a train tells you everything. You never learn their name.
Certain questions ("How's the family?") return exceptions when the family is a wreck.
Confused for conversation by lonely people. By you, sometimes, after the third drink.

Edge cases

Scenario	Behavior
Both parties are exhausted	Degrades to nodding. Still works.
One party is grieving	Protocol stalls. No clean exit.
Mutual attraction is present	Small talk becomes flirting wearing a trench coat
Party contains a child	Child ignores protocol. Asks about death immediately.
Duration exceeds 4 minutes	Slides into medium talk. Unstable territory.

Error codes

ERR_TOO_REAL        : You said something true. Recovery: laugh.
ERR_LONG_PAUSE      : Silence has entered the room. Mention the soup.
ERR_NO_EXIT         : Conversation has no door. Walk toward a plant.
ERR_WRONG_PERSON    : Greeted a stranger as a friend. Commit fully.
WARN_GOING_DEEPER   : You have asked a second follow-up question. Turn back.
