Small Talk

What it actually is

A load-bearing wall disguised as a hallway conversation. Removal not recommended.

How it works

Two or more instances of a person detect each other in a low-stakes environment. Neither has enough context to run intimacy and neither wants the overhead of silence. Small Talk initializes automatically, often without consent from either party.

The protocol proceeds as follows:

Greeting packet is exchanged. ("Hey!" / "Hey!")
Topic arbitration selects from the approved pool: weather, weekend, commute, sports if regional flags align.
Mutual acknowledgment loop runs until one party detects an exit condition (door opens, phone buzzes, God intervenes).
Graceful termination is attempted. Execution varies.

Maintains social fabric at extremely low computational cost
Operates in elevator, watercooler, and checkout-line environments
Fully stateless: no memory between sessions is required or wanted

Known bugs

Topic bleed: user accidentally escalates to real feelings. Catastrophic. No rollback available.
Infinite loop condition: "So, keeping busy?" triggers "Yeah, you?" which triggers the original query. Session never closes.
False positive match: user believes small talk implies friendship. It does not. It never did.
Sincerity injection: one party means it. The other party is not running the same version. Versions are never the same.

FAQ

Q: Is Small Talk meaningless? A: It is load-bearing. That is different from meaningful. The wall does not need to be beautiful.

Q: Can I opt out? A: You can. People will describe you using words like "cold" and "a lot" and "you know how they are."

Q: What is the point? A: The point is that loneliness is the alternative and humans will paper over it with anything, including barometric pressure updates, and honestly? Fair enough. Compile the weather. Ship it.
