# silence
## What it actually is
The negative space inside which every unbearable thought finally gets a turn at the microphone.
## How it works
Sound ceases, or diminishes below a perceptual threshold. The auditory cortex stops processing input. The [nervous system](/nervous-system), suddenly under-occupied, redirects resources toward everything it was too busy to notice. Memories surface. Griefs queue up. The thing you said in 2009 loads without buffering. [dread](/dread) initializes. There is nobody to interrupt any of it.
In theory, silence is the absence of content. In practice, it is the loudest possible content, delivered from inside.
## Features
- Full removal of acoustic cover
- Unobstructed access to unfinished thoughts
- Compatibility with [grief](/grief), [guilt](/guilt), and low-grade existential background radiation
- No configuration required. It starts without being asked.
- Works in the dark. Works especially well in the dark.
## Known Bugs
This is the main event.
**BUG-001: The Tinnitus Substitute**
True silence is not accessible on most hardware. The [ear](/ear) manufactures a replacement tone. You can never actually get there. The door is always slightly open.
**BUG-002: The Intrusive Loop**
Extended silence triggers recursive replay of unresolved conversations. There is no `--skip` flag. The conversation plays until something interrupts it or the user falls asleep.
**BUG-003: Context Collapse**
Silence after loss does not behave like silence before loss. The codebase changed. The same acoustic conditions now run entirely different processes. This is not documented anywhere until you are already inside it.
**BUG-004: The Guilt Engine**
Certain users report that silence activates a background process cataloguing every harm done, every kindness withheld, every version of the self that was never shipped. This process has no kill command. Keeping busy is a workaround, not a fix.
**BUG-005: Presence-shaped Holes**
Silence in a space previously occupied by another person is a different binary entirely. It carries the exact acoustic signature of [absence](/absence). Many users cannot distinguish between the two at runtime. This is by design, apparently.
**BUG-006: The Paradox of Seeking**
Users who deliberately install silence to achieve [peace](/peace) report that the act of wanting it prevents it. The observer corrupts the observed. Filed as wontfix.
## Changelog
v0.0.1 — original release, pre-civilization v0.1.0 — music installed as patch v0.4.0 — ambient noise introduced, silence begins its deprecation arc v0.9.0 — smartphones. silence moved to legacy support. v0.0.1 — (current) occasionally reinstalled by grief or power outage
## Deprecation Notice
Silence is technically still available but is no longer actively maintained. Most users have replaced it with [noise](/noise), [content](/content), or a podcast about true crime. Support tickets will be reviewed when the maintainer responds. The maintainer has not responded.
## FAQ
**Q: Is silence healthy?**
A: Yes. Also very difficult to tolerate. Both true simultaneously.
**Q: What lives inside silence?**
A: You do. That is the whole issue.
**Q: How do I stop the thoughts?**
A: Open a new ticket. This is outside the scope of this spec.
