What it actually is

A letter the body sends. You are the last to know.

How it works

Something breaks threshold. A signal fires. It travels the long dark corridor of nerve toward the place where meaning lives. There, it does not merely arrive. It occupies.

The brain does not receive pain like a message received. It constructs it. Whole. Like a room you suddenly find yourself standing in, with no memory of the door.

This is the error. Pain does not negotiate. It witnesses. It waits.

Features

Acute mode: bright, fast, specific. A compass pointing directly at damage.
Chronic mode: low fire. Slow weather. Rewires the attention around itself like ivy on stone.
Referred pain: speaks from somewhere that is not the source. A poet's habit. An interrogator's trick.
Phantom pain: persists past the thing that caused it. Memory with nerve endings.
Empathic echo: watching someone else suffer activates overlapping systems. You were never as separate as you thought.

Known bugs

Continues running after the threat has resolved.
Scales inconsistently. A paper cut can overwrite a grief.
Chronic instances can suppress the very signal they were meant to carry.
Reports wrong location approximately 30% of cases (see: referred pain, above).
Occasionally misfires with no input at all. Unknown origin. Not a bug the maintainer acknowledges.

Edge cases

Pain shared with another person does not halve. It does something stranger. It changes shape.
The absence of pain, after long pain, feels like a room with no furniture. Disorienting. Almost grief.
Children in pain often laugh. The nervous system is not always legible.
Some people cannot feel it at all. This is called congenital insensitivity. It is not a gift. It is a different danger.

FAQ

Does it mean something? Sometimes signal, sometimes noise. The body is diligent but not wise.

Does it end? Acute: yes. Chronic: changes. Grief-shaped pain: outlives the categories.

Is there a reason for it? That question runs on a different system. File it under meaning. This spec does not cover meaning.
