What it actually is

A feeling of coherence strong enough to justify the cost of being conscious.

How it works

Meaning does not exist in objects, events, or outcomes. It is generated at the boundary between a mind and its circumstances, when the mind successfully narrows the gap between "what is happening" and "what should be happening." The process is automatic, poorly documented, and cannot be invoked directly.

The general pipeline:

Experience arrives, unformatted.
Memory attempts pattern match against prior narrative.
If match exceeds threshold: sensation of coherence fires.
Coherence is retrospectively labeled "meaning."
User reports feeling it was there all along.

Step 5 is not a bug. It is load-bearing.

Features

Portable: can be extracted from almost any material, including suffering, repetition, and breakfast.
Retroactive: events that felt meaningless at runtime are frequently recompiled years later with full meaning restored.
Transferable: witnessing someone else's meaning is a documented delivery mechanism for your own.
Lossy: the act of explaining meaning to another person reduces it by approximately 30 to 70 percent.

Known bugs

Meaning inflation: prolonged abundance of provided meaning (see: advertising, certain childhoods) makes self-generated meaning harder to sustain.
Recursion trap: asking whether meaning is itself meaningful causes a loop with no guaranteed exit. Do not run in production.

Edge cases

Meaning has been reported to spike during mundane events (washing dishes, long drives) and crash during events specifically engineered to produce it (weddings, graduations). This behavior is confirmed and will not be patched.
Some users run stably for years on purpose, which is meaning with a delivery schedule. Others find purpose hollow and require unscheduled meaning or none at all. Both configurations are supported.
Nihilism is not the absence of meaning. It is meaning's shadow process, running in the background, confirming the shape of what it claims to deny.
