# Internet
## What it actually is
A mirror humans built to see themselves clearly, then could not stop looking at.
## How it works
Packets of data route themselves around damage. This was the original promise: [resilience](/resilience). The physical layer holds. Fiber under oceans. Towers on hills. Routers in climate-controlled rooms managed by people paid not quite enough.
The social layer does not hold. [Human attention](/human-attention) enters the system and is immediately auctioned. The auction takes approximately 200 milliseconds. The winner is whoever made the most accurate bet about what you are afraid of.
Above that: content. Below that: [loneliness](/loneliness) dressed as connection. The two layers interact constantly and pretend not to know each other.
## Features
- Global communication at near-zero marginal cost
- Every library ever, plus comments
- [Misinformation](/misinformation) at industrial scale
- Real-time documentation of atrocities, mostly unaddressed
- E-commerce (functional)
- Community for people who would otherwise have none (this one is real, do not discount it)
- The ability to be wrong publicly, permanently, and searchably
## Known Bugs
This is the main event.
| Bug | Severity | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Attention harvested and sold without meaningful consent | Critical | By design |
| Truth and fabrication rendered visually identical | Critical | Unresolved, profitable |
| [Outrage](/outrage) optimized over accuracy by every major feed algorithm | Critical | Won't fix |
| Children handed the system with no documentation | Critical | Ongoing |
| [Surveillance capitalism](/surveillance-capitalism) mistaken for a free service | Critical | Working as intended |
| Context collapse: every audience receives every message simultaneously | High | Wontfix |
| Infrastructure controlled by ~5 companies | High | Accelerating |
| The comment section | High | Known since 1994 |
| Teenagers | High | Legacy dependency, cannot remove |
| [Loneliness](/loneliness) increasing in proportion to connectivity | High | Unconfirmed by shareholders |
| Content moderation: simultaneously over and under | Medium | Hire more contractors |
| Doomscrolling loop has no exit condition | Medium | Ships as feature |

## Error Codes
ERR_CONTEXT_MISSING You are reading this without knowing who wrote it or why. ERR_ATTENTION_DEPLETED You have reached the end of your focus budget for the day. ERR_OUTRAGE_OVERFLOW The thing you are angry about happened three days ago. ERR_SOURCE_UNTRACEABLE This belief entered your head. Origin: unknown. ERR_PERMANENCE_UNEXPECTED You said this in 2011. It is still here.
## Deprecation Notice
The original architecture assumed good faith. That dependency is deprecated. The system continues to run on its absence, which turns out to be a more reliable fuel.
Replacement: unclear. [The commons](/the-commons) was attempted. [Web3](/web3) was attempted. Regulators are typing.
Do not migrate until a destination exists.
