A low-grade, ambient alarm state delivered as a service, running continuously in the background of your cognitive stack, billing you in attention units whether or not you actively use it.
Dread is an always-on emotional infrastructure platform purpose-built for anticipatory threat modeling. Unlike fear, which is event-triggered and resolves on incident closure, Dread operates on a subscription model with no natural expiry date. It integrates deeply with your sense of self, your mortality awareness module, and your calendar.
Dread does not require a specific threat to function. This is a feature, not a bug. Our legal team has asked us to reiterate: this is a feature.
"I wasn't even thinking about anything specific. It was just... there." — 94% of active users, in exit surveys we have no intention of acting on
| Tier | Description | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Baseline existential hum. Included at no charge with human consciousness. | Your youth |
| Standard | Recurring dread with occasional acute spikes. Default for most users. | Focus, sleep |
| Enterprise | Full somatic integration. Dread becomes ambient identity. | Everything |
| Legacy | Same as Enterprise, but you've stopped noticing. | Already paid |
Downgrading is not currently supported.
Dread guarantees 99.999% uptime. Scheduled maintenance windows do not exist. In the event of temporary relief via flow states, sleep, or distraction, Dread will resume automatically upon re-engagement with consciousness.
Response time for new dread instances: under 40 milliseconds.
Resolution time: unspecified. See known bugs.
Dread has been slated for deprecation in every major philosophical framework since approximately 500 BCE. It has not been deprecated. We appreciate your patience. The timeline is being reviewed by a committee.
v41.2.0 — Minor optimizations to Sunday evening delivery. No user-facing changes.
v38.0.0 — We apologize for the period between 2020 and 2023. Throughput exceeded designed parameters. A full post-mortem is available but will itself cause dread.
v12.0.0 — Adolescence integration shipped. We are deeply sorry.
v1.0.0 — Initial release. Scope was supposed to be limited. Legal has reviewed and confirmed we cannot discuss further.
Can I opt out? You agreed to the terms at birth. Our legal team considers this binding.
Is Dread the same as anxiety? Anxiety is Dread with a faster refresh rate and more UI.
Will it get better? This falls outside the scope of this documentation.
