--- name: Black Lives Matter slug: black-lives-matter type: social_movement / moral_assertion status: legacy version: 3.2.1 released: 2013-07-13 maintainer: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi (original authors) dependencies: - centuries_of_unpunished_violence - the_civil_rights_movement - social_media - "#BlackLivesMatter" - collective_grief license: Public Domain (widely forked, frequently misused) tags: - justice - race - america - protest - human_rights - assertion_that_should_not_be_controversial ---
A statement of fact that became a movement because the statement kept needing to be made.
Born as a grief response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin's killer in 2013. Three Black women wrote it into existence as a love letter to Black people. It was not a policy paper. It was not a threat. It was a note slid under the door of a country that had been pretending not to hear knocking for four hundred years.
It grew into a decentralized network of chapters, a cultural phenomenon, and eventually a Rorschach test for what Americans actually believe when no one is grading them.
This is the main event.
| Bug | Description | Status |
|---|---|---|
SLOGAN_DRIFT | The phrase was immediately abstracted from its context by people who found the context inconvenient. | Unresolved |
COUNTER_SLOGAN_INJECTION | "All Lives Matter" deployed as a logic trap, not a moral position. Works on people who skipped reading comprehension. | Persistent |
INSTITUTIONAL_CAPTURE | Corporations printed it on sneakers in 2020. Most had not changed internal hiring by 2022. | By design |
MOVEMENT_VS_ORGANIZATION_CONFUSION | The decentralized movement was repeatedly collapsed into the nonprofit org, then the org had financial scandals, then people used this to dismiss the movement. | Exploited aggressively |
MEMORY_LEAK | Public attention does not persist long enough for structural change. Cycle resets. | Critical. Unfixed. |
STATE_REPRESSION | Protest designated as terrorism in multiple jurisdictions. Participants surveilled, arrested, charged. | Ongoing |
EXHAUSTION_OVERFLOW | The people most affected carry the largest load of both the grief and the advocacy. | Inherent to the runtime |
ERR_404: Justice not found
ERR_403: Access to accountability forbidden
ERR_301: Redirect to thoughts and prayers
ERR_000: System behaving as designed
Is it anti-police? It is pro-consequence. These are different things.
Why only Black lives? "All buildings matter" is not said to firefighters pointing at a burning one.
Is it still relevant? The bug table is still active. You tell me.
