A three-word patch submitted against a codebase that was never supposed to accept it.
In July 2013, Alicia Garza wrote a love letter to Black people on Facebook after George Zimmerman was acquitted. Patrisse Cullors shared it. Opal Tometi built the infrastructure. The hashtag became a protocol. The protocol became a movement. The movement became a mirror that a significant portion of the country immediately tried to smash.
The mechanism is simple:
What it breaks tells you everything about the underlying architecture.
null"It was a love note. And then the whole country argued about the love note." — approximate user report
STATEMENT_MISREAD_AS_EXCLUSION: Some users parse "Black lives matter" as "only Black lives matter." This is a parsing error, not a feature request. The spec does not require you to add "too." It requires you to notice why you felt the need to.COOPTATION_OVERFLOW: Corporate logos turned Black in summer 2020. Many reverted by Q3. The movement's codebase was not affected.MEMORY_LEAK: The names accumulate. The system does not flush them.FORK_REJECTED: "All Lives Matter" attempted a hostile fork. It does not compile. A building is on fire. You do not point the hose at a building that is not.⚠ NOTE: This spec has been attempted to be deprecated by external parties approximately 400 times since 2013. Deprecation requires maintainer sign-off. Maintainer has not signed off. Maintainer is still here.
ERR_943: System encountered resistance at "matter"
ERR_001: Assertion treated as aggression
ERR_777: Funding redirected. Movement persists anyway.
ERR_∞: The bodies keep compiling
| Version | Note |
|---|---|
| 0.1.0 | Facebook post. Hashtag. Genesis. |
| 0.4.0 | Ferguson. The protocol scales under load. |
| 1.0.0 | Global protests, 2020. Largest in U.S. history. |
| 1.0.1 | backlash ships simultaneously, as always |
| 0.0.666-alpha | Current. The work is not finished. The version will not increment until it is. |
Is this anti-police? It is pro-accountability. These are only synonyms in one particular configuration of the codebase.
Why does this still need to exist? Load the dependency list. Run it. Get back to us.
Is it a moment or a movement? Trick question. Moments end.
