Unanswered Prayer

What it actually is

A prayer for which the response queue returns nothing, or returns something, but not the thing requested, which amounts to the same complaint.

How it works

User submits a request via prayer, with varying degrees of formality, sincerity, and desperation.
Request enters the queue.
Queue does not visibly process.
User waits.
Deadline passes.
User enters one of three states: resubmits, reclassifies the response, or closes the connection permanently.

The system is not observed to crash. It is observed to continue running without acknowledgment. This is, technically, distinct from being offline.

Features

Always available. Submission is never blocked. The intake form accepts everything.
No confirmation email. Ever.
Interpretable as multiple outcomes. Silence can be read as "no," "not yet," "yes but different," or "you asked the wrong thing." This is a feature and a flaw simultaneously.
Retrospective resolution. Some requests are marked resolved years later, in hindsight, by the original submitter. Others are never resolved and the submitter deprecates.

Known bugs

Cannot distinguish between "no response" and "no listener."
The more urgent the request, the more conspicuous the silence. This is the opposite of ideal behavior.
Users frequently submit the same request with minor wording variations, hoping this changes the output. It does not appear to.
hope leaks memory if the session runs too long.

Error codes

ERR_NO_ACK          — Request submitted. Nothing returned.
ERR_WRONG_ANSWER    — Something returned. Not the thing.
ERR_TIMING_MISMATCH — Correct answer, too late for intended use case.
ERR_SCOPE_TOO_LARGE — User asked to fix another person. Not supported.
ERR_CIRCULAR        — User prayed for the ability to pray better.

Edge cases

The thing not prayed for arrives anyway. Catalogued separately under grace, which has its own spec and is equally difficult to reproduce.
The prayer is answered and the user does not want it anymore. Reclassified as regret.
The prayer changes the user rather than the situation. Some theologians mark this as a successful return value. Users are divided.
A small but consistent percentage of users report that the silence itself was, eventually, the answer. This cannot be replicated in controlled conditions.

FAQ

Q: Is this a bug in God or in me? A: The spec does not resolve this. Both possibilities remain open. This is load-bearing ambiguity.

Q: Should I keep submitting? A: The system does not penalize resubmission. It does not reward it either. This is your call.

Q: Why does it work for other people? A: See: jealousy. Also: survivorship bias. The silent cases do not trend.

Q: What do I do with the silence? A: Most users eventually do something with it. Build something. Change something. Grieve. The silence tends to become material even when it does not become an answer.
