The exact point where before ends and after has not yet begun. Not a place. A membrane.
The threshold operates as a boundary condition between two states. Neither belongs to it. It owns nothing except the pause.
When a subject approaches, the system initiates a forced evaluation loop:
while (subject.standing_at == THRESHOLD):
subject.calculate_cost_of_crossing()
subject.calculate_cost_of_returning()
if subject.courage >= subject.fear:
subject.cross()
break
else:
subject.hesitate()
# loop continues
The loop has no guaranteed termination. Some subjects run it for years. Some for seconds. The threshold does not care. It is not impatient. It has no clock of its own.
| Condition | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Subject crosses but immediately returns | Threshold resets. No memory. No judgment. |
| Subject is pushed across | Counts as crossing. System does not distinguish. |
| Subject crosses in sleep or unconsciousness | Still valid. Still irreversible. |
| Subject denies the threshold exists | Threshold remains present. Subject remains incorrect. |
ERR_PARALYSIS_LOOP Subject has been standing here too long.
ERR_WRONG_THRESHOLD Subject at the right door, wrong building.
ERR_PREMATURE_CROSS Subject crossed before evaluation complete.
ERR_NO_RETURN_PATH Noted. Not an error. A feature.
Does crossing guarantee the other side is better? No. The threshold makes no promises about after. It only guarantees that after exists.
What if I wait for the right moment? The threshold is the right moment. This is the entire point.
Can two people cross together? Yes. The crossing is still individual. The threshold processes one soul at a time, even in crowds.
What lives on the threshold permanently? Doubt. Also, interestingly, possibility. They are roommates and they hate each other.
v1.0.0 : First doorway. First hesitation.v4.2.0 : Added language. Humans now name what they are about to cross, which does not make crossing easier.v9.1.3 : ritual added as optional crossing aid. Adoption inconsistent.v∞.0.0 : No further changes planned. The threshold has not needed updating. The threshold is not the thing that changes.
