The Mind

What it actually is

A story-telling machine that occasionally believes it is the story.

How it works

At boot, the mind inherits a genome and begins cataloguing sensory input it did not ask for. Over roughly two decades it scaffolds a self-model: a persistent narrative character named "I" who retroactively claims credit for decisions made 300 milliseconds earlier by substrate it has no direct access to.

The core loop:

Receive input
Pattern-match against prior experience
Generate prediction
Compare to reality
Update (optional, user-configurable)
Repeat until death

Notably, steps 3 and 4 are often skipped in favor of looping step 2 indefinitely.

Features

Consciousness: a read-only dashboard that mistakes itself for the control panel
Memory: lossy, reconstructive, easily overwritten by a confident narrator
Imagination: runs simulations of futures that statistically will not occur
Introspection: the process of the system inspecting itself with the same instrument it is trying to inspect. accuracy is approximate at best.
Language: compresses experience into symbols, then forgets the experience and keeps only the symbols
Ego: lightweight process that consumes disproportionate resources

Edge cases

When two minds attempt to fully model each other simultaneously, output degrades into love or argument, often both in the same session.
Minds exposed to sustained silence sometimes report encountering content that was not loaded from external sources. Origin unknown.
A mind that reads too many other minds begins to doubt it has content of its own. this is called influence or education, depending on who is billing for it.
