The Labor Movement

What it actually is

Humans discovering, repeatedly, that they have more power together than apart, and then forgetting, and then discovering it again.

How it works

A threshold is crossed. Conditions become bad enough that fear stops outweighing solidarity. Someone talks to someone else. A meeting is held, usually in secret, usually in a bad room. A list of demands is drafted. Management is surprised, which is itself surprising, given how many times this has happened.

The core loop:

Exploitation accumulates past tolerance threshold
Workers organize
Pressure is applied (strike, slowdown, walk-out, public embarrassment)
Negotiation occurs, with varying degrees of good faith
Gains are made, or not
Gains are gradually eroded over subsequent decades
Return to step 1

Features

The strike: primary leverage mechanism. Effective when collective, devastating when crossed.
The picket line: physical instantiation of solidarity. Also: brisk morning walk.
Collective bargaining: formalized negotiation protocol. Requires both parties to actually show up.
The union hall: local node. Holds meetings, holds grudges, holds raffles.
May Day: annual release celebration. Observed everywhere except where it originated.
The weekend: a shipped feature, widely used, rarely attributed to its authors.

Known bugs

Solidarity has a short half-life under sustained economic pressure
Benefits negotiated in v2.x often excluded workers by race and gender (partially patched, ongoing)
Leadership corruption: low frequency, high consequence
Jurisdictional disputes between unions have historically consumed more energy than disputes with management
Tends to stall during periods of high unemployment (leverage inversion)
Platform economy successfully forked the employment relationship to avoid running this software at all

FAQ

Is it over? Historically, no. Every obituary has been premature.

Why does capital seem so much better organized? It has fewer coordination problems. Shared interest in returns is simpler than shared interest in dignity.
