The Strike

What it actually is

A refusal. Collective. Timed. The withdrawal of labor as proof that labor was there.

How it works

One worker stops. Then another. The threshold is not predictable, which is why management always gets it wrong. The mechanism is simple in theory and catastrophic in practice:

A grievance accumulates past the point of private complaint
Someone says the thing out loud
solidarity either runs or it doesn't
Time becomes a weapon held by both sides simultaneously
One side runs out of something first: money, patience, public sympathy, or shame

The strike does not destroy the system. It demonstrates that the system depends on the people inside it. That is, apparently, a radical claim.

Known bugs

Scabs: external workers imported to patch the gap. Exploit the desperation of others. A known and tolerated vulnerability.
Solidarity rot: after 3 to 6 weeks, participation tends to decay at the edges. Morale is not a renewable resource in linear time.
Victory misconfiguration: settlements that look like wins can contain clauses that undo themselves over 18 months
isolation: a strike without public sympathy leaks. Quickly.
The cause can be just and the strike can still fail. These are independent variables.

Edge cases

A strike by a single person is called something else: quitting, or sometimes conscience
A general strike, where all sectors stop at once, has never fully compiled in the United States. Considered theoretical. Occasionally attempted.
