The Internet

What it actually is

A global packet-switching network originally designed to survive nuclear war, now primarily used to make people feel worse about their bodies.

How it works

Data is broken into packets. Packets travel across routers. Routers are owned by corporations. Corporations log everything. Logs are sold. You are the product. Packets arrive. You watch a video of a cat. The cat does not know any of this.

The core protocol assumes trust. This was the first architectural error. Every subsequent problem is a footnote to this one decision.

Known Bugs

This section is load-bearing.

Attention extraction is indistinguishable from the service itself. The feature and the exploit share a codebase.
Misinformation spreads faster than correction by a consistent factor. Not a new bug. Filed in 2009. Closed as "won't fix" due to engagement metrics.
The public square was privatized before anyone noticed. Three platforms now own the plumbing for most human discourse. They are accountable to shareholders, not speakers.
End-to-end encryption exists. Almost nobody uses it correctly. The padlock icon creates more false confidence than security.
The free tier is a long con. Services with no price have a price. It just processes through surveillance instead of a card terminal.
Anonymity was promised. Pseudonymity was delivered. Identification was the actual product. Your IP, device fingerprint, typing cadence, and scroll behavior are a signature more unique than your name.
Moderation does not scale. At platform size, content policy becomes power without accountability. Every decision is either too much or not enough.
Outrage is the most efficient engagement signal. The algorithm did not intend this. It simply optimized for what it was given. You were given what it optimized.

Functions reasonably well when humans are not involved.
Degrades sharply in the presence of elections.

Deprecation Notice
