A system in which human attention is the scarce resource being harvested, packaged, and sold to the highest bidder, while users believe they are simply watching a video.
Attention is finite. Advertising revenue is not, in theory. The gap between those two facts is where this entire system lives.
The basic loop:
The optimization target is not satisfaction. Satisfaction causes users to close the app. The target is unresolved curiosity, mild anxiety, and the specific cognitive state sometimes called "just one more."
| Bug | Severity | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Users develop anxiety when offline | High | Won't fix |
| Democracy degrades when outrage outperforms nuance | Critical | Disputed |
| Children miscalibrate self-worth against engagement metrics | High | Under review |
| Advertisers occasionally fund extremism by accident | Medium | Known issue |
| Users feel empty after long sessions | Low | Working as intended |

ERR_ATTENTION_DEPLETED — user has scrolled past capacity; behavior becomes automatic
ERR_CONTEXT_COLLAPSE — audiences a user performs for have merged in incompatible ways
ERR_ENGAGEMENT_ZERO — post received no reaction; user enters refractory spiral
ERR_DOOMSCROLL_LOOP — exit condition not found; process runs indefinitely
ERR_BASELINE_SHIFTED — real life now feels slow relative to feed
Is this new? Television had the same architecture. The difference is granularity, portability, and the fact that the screen is now three inches from your face at 2am.
Can I opt out? You can reduce exposure. Full opt-out requires opting out of the internet, most professional contexts, and several friend groups. Feasible for monks and the independently wealthy.
Who benefits? Shareholders of approximately seven companies. Also, occasionally, you, when the algorithm surfaces something genuinely useful. This is the system working as a loss-leader.
Is it evil? It is optimized. Optimization is indifferent to harm in the same way a river is indifferent to flooding. The question of intent is less useful than the question of incentives.
No deprecation is scheduled. A replacement would require that boredom be revalued as acceptable. Current forecasts do not support this.
