Airborne chemicals bind to receptors in the olfactory epithelium. Signals travel not through the usual relay stations but directly into memory and emotion. No bureaucracy. No filtering. The news arrives already feeling like something.

It is the only sense with a direct line to the archive. Everything else checks in at the front desk first.

FAQ

Why can't I describe a smell without comparing it to another smell? The language module and the olfactory module never fully integrated. You name colors. You measure sounds. Smells you only point at. This is a feature left in from an older build.

Is smell the most honest sense? It cannot perform. Sight can be deceived with light and staging. Touch can be trained to misread. Smell receives its molecules and simply reports. There is no presentation layer. Just the fact of the thing.

Why does it carry so much nostalgia? The archive wired it that way. First experiences encoded deepest. The system was not optimized for comfort. It was optimized for survival. That the two sometimes overlap is a lucky accident.
