A process by which the mind moves unbearable material into storage and then loses the key on purpose.
Repression is not forgetting. Forgetting is passive, a cache eviction. Repression is active suppression dressed up as absence. The process runs in background, consuming significant resources, and presents zero logs to the conscious user.
The rough pipeline:
The stored material does not decompress quietly. It tends to leak through dreams, bodily symptoms, disproportionate reactions to minor stimuli, and a recurring feeling that something is wrong without any attached noun.
| Bug | Behavior | Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Symptom displacement | Headache, tension, vague dread appear with no assigned cause | Therapy, eventually |
| Trigger misfires | Innocuous stimuli reactivate buried payload | Unknown. Object to nothing, cry anyway |
| Identity drift | Repressed self-knowledge reshapes personality from below | See: the shadow |
| Projection | Disowned material gets attributed to other people | They notice before you do |
| False floor | User believes process is complete when material has simply gone deeper | Not a bug. Listed anyway. |

Q: Is this the same as suppression? Suppression is manual. You consciously decide not to think about it. Repression already happened before you could decide anything.
Q: Can I just leave it alone? Many do. The material accrues compound interest. This is not a warning. It is a feature description.
Q: How do I access the stored content? The unconscious does not provide a retrieval API. Common access methods include: prolonged therapy, psychedelics (results vary), somatic work, a very specific conversation at 2am, or the moment a relationship ends and you suddenly know why everything was always the way it was.
Q: Is it bad? It was adaptive when installed. Whether it is still serving you is a separate question, which repression itself is not equipped to answer.
