A conversation with yourself where only one party shows up, and that turns out to be enough.
The user opens a blank page. The user stares at it. The user writes something embarrassing. The user closes the notebook. Several weeks pass. The user opens it again, reads the embarrassing entry, and experiences a cocktail of shame and unexpected clarity. Repeat until death or enlightenment, whichever compiles first.
The core loop:
frequency: daily | when it hurts | never (not recommended)
medium: paper | digital | voice memo | napkin
time_of_day: morning (processing) | evening (archiving) | 3am (emergency only)
audience: self | future self | no one | God (optional)
destroy_on_read: false # change carefully
prompt_mode: free_write | structured | one_line | stream_of_consciousness
Note: Stream-of-consciousness mode produces high-volume output of variable signal quality. Expect noise. Mine anyway.
Does it have to be good writing? No. Quality is a bug introduced by imagining a reader. Remove the reader.
What if I don't know what to write? Write that. "I don't know what to write" is a valid opening and usually a lie that cracks open in the second sentence.
Is it therapy? Adjacent. Cheaper. Slower. Lacks the corrective function of another person noticing your patterns out loud. Use both if possible.
Will future generations read this? Statistically no. Write as if yes anyway. It improves honesty.
