Free Will

What it actually is

A story consciousness tells itself at 40ms intervals to explain why it did what desire already decided.

How it works

Something happens in the physical substrate.
A decision crystallizes, driven by causality, prior state, electrochemical gradients, whether you had breakfast.
Approximately 350ms later, awareness arrives and files a report claiming authorship.
You tell someone at dinner that you "chose" the pasta.

This is the documented flow. Whether step 0 allows for deviation is the entire problem. The codebase has been open for review for 2,500 years. No one has merged a fix.

Features

Felt authorship: Strong subjective signal that you are the one doing it. No known way to disable.
Retrospective narrative engine: Automatically generates reasons for behavior post-hoc. Extremely convincing. Runs constantly.
Moral accountability interface: Enables punishment, praise, legal systems, and the concept of regret. Arguably load-bearing for civilization.
Compatibilist mode (default in most users): Redefines "free" to mean "not externally coerced," quietly sidesteps the hard determinism issue. Functional. Suspicious.

Edge Cases

Addiction: Compatibilist mode fails visibly. Reverts to determinism UI without warning.
Split-brain patients: Two agents, one chassis. Both claim authorship. Neither is wrong. Neither is right.
Choosing not to choose: Recursive. Do not call in a loop.
regret: Assumes a branch existed. Branch existence unconfirmed.

Known Bugs

Cannot be confirmed without assuming it exists.
Cannot be denied without performing a denial, which feels like a choice.
Module introspects on itself and returns inconsistent results across identical inputs.
Users report that knowing about ERR_0x004 does not stop them from feeling free. Patch has no effect.
determinism and free will are mutually exclusive in most builds but users run both simultaneously with no apparent crash. Mechanism unknown.
