A molecule responsible for wanting, commonly mistaken for pleasure.
Dopamine does not deliver satisfaction. It delivers the instruction to pursue satisfaction. This is the central misunderstanding that has caused enormous confusion in pop science, self-help publishing, and app design.
The system works like this:
This is called a prediction error signal. It is a beautiful and merciless system.
| Bug ID | Description | Severity |
|---|---|---|
DOP-001 | Anticipation loop with no termination condition | High |
DOP-002 | Hijackable by superstimuli (sugar, cocaine, social media notifications) | Critical |
DOP-003 | Tolerance buildup causes baseline drift downward | High |
DOP-004 | Conflates novelty with value | Medium |
DOP-005 | Does not distinguish between productive and destructive pursuit | High |
"I thought I wanted it. Turns out I just wanted to want it." — every user, eventually
# dopamine/config.yaml
reward_prediction_error: enabled
novelty_bonus: true
baseline_hedonia: individual # varies wildly, not user-adjustable
reuptake_speed: fast # ~200ms clearance
autoreceptor_sensitivity: medium
sustained_release: false # this is not how it works, ignore supplements claiming otherwise
Dopamine does not run alone. It depends on:
REWARD_ABSENT_AFTER_CUE // the worst one
TOLERANCE_CEILING_REACHED // nothing feels like much anymore
LOOP_WITHOUT_EXIT // doomscrolling, gambling, refreshing
SIGNAL_HIJACKED // substance dependency initiated
MOTOR_PATH_DEGRADED // see: Parkinson's
Q: Is dopamine the pleasure chemical? A: No. That is a persistent misattribution. pleasure is closer to opioid territory. Dopamine is the "go get it" signal, not the "that was good" signal.
Q: Can I hack my dopamine? A: You can redirect it toward things that don't damage the receptor bed. Exercise, cold exposure, and delayed gratification are documented methods. All slower than the alternatives. All more stable.
Q: Why does everything feel boring after something exciting? A: Prediction error recalibration. The system updated its expectations upward. You are now paying the invoice.
