Debt

What it actually is

A promise to pay the future for something you are taking from the present.

How it works

Entity A has a thing. Entity B wants the thing but lacks current capacity to exchange for it.
A transfers the thing. B issues a claim against their own future self.
The future self of B is not consulted.
Interest accrues. This is described as fair.
The cycle runs until B pays, defaults, dies, or restructures. In rare cases, all four.

Features

Leverage: acquire resources beyond current means. Used to build cathedrals, empires, and moderately sized homes in undesirable suburbs.
Transferable: debt can be sold, packaged, sliced, re-sold, and insured. The original thing is eventually forgotten.
Compounding: interest earns interest. Referred to as "magic" by people who benefit from it and "violence" by people who do not.
Moral dimension: uniquely among financial instruments, debt carries shame. This is a feature, not a bug. It aids collection.
Civilizational infrastructure: without debt, no roads, no universities, no iPhones. Also fewer wars. Net unclear.

Edge cases

Sovereign debt: a nation borrows against its own future productivity. If it defaults, power redistributes. Economists disagree about everything else.
Emotional debt: undocumented, unenforceable, and somehow the most aggressively collected variant. See obligation.
Debt jubilee: periodic mass cancellation practiced by ancient Mesopotamia. Considered radical today. Considered obvious then.
Student loans: debt issued to 18-year-olds against careers that do not yet exist. A known antipattern with no deprecation timeline.

Changelog
