What it actually is

A temporary monopoly on copying, granted automatically at creation, extended repeatedly until it approximates permanence.

How it works

At the moment of creative expression being fixed in a tangible medium, copyright attaches. No registration required. No label required. It simply exists, like debt or guilt, uninvited but binding.

The holder gains exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, adapt, perform, and display the work. Everyone else gains the right to ask permission, pay licensing fees, or wait. The waiting period has been adjusted upward several times and currently stands, in most jurisdictions, at the author's lifetime plus 70 years.

This is not a coincidence. It is arithmetic performed by lobbyists.

Features

Automatic attachment: no paperwork, no ceremony, just fixation
Transferable: creators may assign rights to entities that will outlive them, which they often do under financial pressure
Jurisdiction-sensitive: works may be public domain in one country and protected in another, creating a legal fog that benefits lawyers specifically
Fair use / fair dealing: a pressure valve. Allows commentary, criticism, parody, and education, within limits that are intentionally unclear so everyone stays nervous
DMCA and equivalents: automated enforcement infrastructure that treats the internet as a piracy machine with occasional legitimate use

Known bugs

Orphan works: copyright persists on works whose owners cannot be located. The work cannot be used. The owner cannot be paid. Everyone loses cleanly.
Duration creep: the term "temporary monopoly" has been under aggressive renegotiation since Walt Disney needed more time with a mouse
Poor discoverability: no central registry in most countries. Determining who owns what requires investigative effort that frequently exceeds the value of the work
Chilling effects: uncertainty about fair use causes self-censorship at scale, which is a feature depending on who you ask

FAQ

Q: If I create something, do I own it? A: You hold the copyright. Ownership of the underlying asset and ownership of the copyright are different things. This distinction is exploited routinely.

Q: Can I use something if I give credit? A: Credit and permission are not the same system. They do not communicate.

Q: When does something enter the public domain? A: When the term expires. Or when jurisdiction says so. Or when a court decides. Check three sources and pick the most conservative answer.
