What it actually is

A compressed data packet transmitted at 4:47am directly into the part of your brain that cannot defend itself.

How it works

The syrinx (not the larynx, do your research) operates as a dual-channel oscillator, allowing simultaneous production of two independent frequencies. No mammal can do this. The birds are aware.

Process flow:

Bird wakes
Bird assesses whether it is alive
Bird announces this finding to the entire neighborhood
Repeat until something eats it or it finds a mate (functionally equivalent outcomes, depending on the species)

The song contains: territorial coordinates, reproductive viability data, species ID, local weather patterns, and sometimes what feels like a personal message. The last item has not been formally verified. It keeps coming up in user reports.
