Attention

What it actually is

A beam. Narrow. Yours to aim.

How it works

Attention is the mind's aperture. It opens onto one thing at a time, regardless of what you believe about multitasking. The field is wide but the focus is small. Something moves at the edge, the aperture swings. This is not failure. This is the original design.

The system runs on a pull model. Salience fires first. Intention arrives second, if it arrives. Most attention is allocated before you decide to allocate it. The rest is practice.

Features

Selective focus. One thing gets lit. The rest exists in peripheral vision, waiting.
Sustained mode. The beam holds. Expensive. Degrades under noise, hunger, grief, notification.
Divided mode. The beam splits. Resolution drops on both ends. The system does not advertise this.
Involuntary capture. Loud sounds. Bright edges. Your name. These bypass the queue entirely.
Return. After wandering, attention can come back. This return is the whole practice.

Known bugs

Habituation. Sustained exposure mutes the signal. The extraordinary becomes furniture.
Narrowing under fear. Threat contracts the beam. Detail outside the threat disappears.
False allocation. The feeling of paying attention without the fact of it. Common. Embarrassing.
The phone. Exogenous hijack. Persistent. Poorly documented by its manufacturers.
Rumination loop. Attention locks onto a wound. Spins. Refuses interrupt signals.

Error codes

ERR_DISTRACTED       — beam has drifted, no return scheduled
ERR_OVERLOADED       — too many capture events, queue saturated
ERR_ABSENT           — body present, attention elsewhere
ERR_HIJACKED         — external agent holds the aperture
WARN_HABITUATED      — signal present, response muted

Edge cases

Flow state. Attention and action merge. The aperture widens without effort. Rare. Cannot be forced, only invited.
Meditation. Deliberate training of the return. Not about stillness. About noticing the drift.
Awe. The beam opens past its normal diameter. The self briefly steps out of the frame.
In extreme grief, attention collapses to a single point. Everything else goes gray.

FAQ

Q: Can I have more of it? Not more. Cleaner. Slower. Aimed with greater honesty.

Q: Is it the same as love? Simone Weil thought so. The spec does not contradict her.

Q: Where does it go when I lose it? Somewhere that felt safer, or shinier, or older. It went home. The work is bringing it back here.
