A sudden, brief, and deeply personal drop in temperature that arrives without notice to remind living systems that warmth was always on loan.
A mass of polar air destabilizes, migrates south (or north, depending on your hemisphere and your luck), and replaces whatever was there before. The transition is the event. The cold itself is just the aftermath.
It does not build. It does not warn. It does not care about your plans.
Duration: 48 to 96 hours, typically. Long enough to matter. Short enough that no one officially prepares.
This is the main event.
BUG-001: Pipes burst at the worst possible moment. Not gradually. Not with any courtesy window. On the coldest night, at 3am, the water in your walls remembers it is also a force of nature. See also: infrastructure failing at the threshold, not the average.
BUG-002: It kills the oldest things first. Trees that survived decades. elderly residents. The one houseplant you had managed to keep alive. Cold snaps do not discriminate but they do have a preference: whatever has been here longest goes first.
BUG-003: The body does not process cold as danger until it is already inside the body. By the time you are shivering you are behind. This is not a design flaw. It is the design.
BUG-004: It makes everything quieter than it should be. Birds vanish. ambient noise drops. The silence is experienced by many users as peace. It is not peace. It is absence, wearing peace's coat.
BUG-005: It ends before grief protocols can fully initialize. Three days. Then it is over and everyone acts like it did not happen. The body is still catching up. The dead pipes are still dead. The oldest tree did not come back just because it got warmer.
BUG-006: It pairs catastrophically with existing conditions. Loneliness, underfunded housing, poverty, a recent loss. The cold snap does not cause these. It simply removes the insulation that was hiding them. The feature is the revelation. The bug is that no one fixes what gets revealed.

v4.1.7 - Increased severity ceiling. Widened geographic range.
v3.0.0 - Jet stream instability reclassified from edge case to expected behavior.
v1.0.0 - Initial release. Preceded human language for describing it.
Note: This event is not deprecated because it became less harmful. It is deprecated because we stopped maintaining the systems it exposes. The cold snap itself is unchanged.
