A temporary, partial overlap between two internal worlds that both parties will immediately begin to misremember.
Understanding someone is not a transfer of information. It is an act of model building: you construct a working replica of another person inside your own mind, using incomplete data, projected assumptions, and whatever mood you happen to be in that Tuesday.
The process runs roughly as follows:
When it works, it produces a feeling sometimes called being seen. When it fails, it produces resentment, projection, or a very long car ride.
| Bug | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Confusing familiarity with understanding | Critical | Common in long relationships |
| Understanding the past version of someone | High | People update; models often don't |
| Mistaking agreement for comprehension | Moderate | Especially in conflict avoidance |
| Projecting own fears as their motivations | High | Nearly universal |
| Believing you are understood in return | Variable | Optimistic at best |

Does understanding someone mean you have to agree with them? No. These are separate processes that are frequently confused, often deliberately.
Can you understand someone you've never met? A version of them. Writers, musicians, and strangers on trains install surprisingly well.
What if understanding fails completely? See loneliness. Also: normal. Keep the attempt in version control anyway.
