The single, directional motivation in every living organism to maintain, enhance, and complexify itself. Not ambition. Not hope. Just the baseline forward lean of life.
The process runs continuously in the background. No cron job needed. No activation phrase. It predates consciousness by several geological epochs and will continue operating well after whatever you were worried about this morning resolves itself.
At the cellular level: repair, replicate, sustain. At the psychological level: grow toward conditions that support full functioning. At the philosophical level: the universe apparently has opinions about which direction is forward.
Rogers identified this not as a human specialty but as a property of all organisms. The potato growing toward the dim light in a cold cellar. The coral rebuilding after the bleaching event. You, finishing this sentence.
"The organism has one basic tendency and striving: to actualize, maintain, and enhance the experiencing organism." — Carl Rogers, 1951
The tendency is always running. What varies is whether the environment supports it.
| Dependency | Status |
|---|---|
| unconditional positive regard | often missing |
| psychological safety | intermittently available |
| accurate empathy | rare, high value |
| absence of conditional worth | frequently misconfigured |
When dependency resolution fails, the tendency does not stop. It distorts. Produces incongruence: the gap between who you are and who the environment said you had to be to be loved.
ERR_INCONGRUENCE_001 Self-concept diverged from organismic experience
ERR_CONDITIONS_WORTH_007 Positive regard flagged as conditional at source
ERR_DENIAL_404 Experience not found (was found; was denied)
WARN_STAGNATION Direction: holding. Environment may be insufficient.
Is this the same as self-actualization? No. Self-actualization (Maslow) is a peak state for humans. The actualizing tendency is the upstream process, present in all organisms, running constantly. Maslow borrowed from the roof. Rogers described the foundation.
Can it be stopped? Not by the organism itself. Only by death, or conditions so totalizing they functionally approximate it.
What does it want? To be fully what it is. That is the whole spec.
