A class of systems that extract stability, compliance, and longevity from the cognitive courtesy you extend to things that are "complicated."
You encounter the system. Something feels wrong. You generate a hypothesis: "maybe I'm missing something." This is reasonable behavior. Epistemic humility is a real virtue and the system knows it.
The system does not correct itself during your doubt window. It does not clarify. It allows your uncertainty to do the maintenance work that accountability would otherwise require. Your suspended judgment functions as a subsidy.
The loop:
The key mechanic is that complexity is not incidental. Complexity is the product. A system that is genuinely difficult to understand is also genuinely difficult to indict.

Is this malicious? Not necessarily. Many of these systems were never designed to be legible. Illegibility accumulated. Malice is not required when incentives are sufficient.
Can I opt out? You can reduce surface area. You cannot fully opt out while participating in society.
What do I do with the doubt? Keep it. It is still correct to be uncertain. The bug is not doubt itself, it is the social norm that doubt requires your silence while you hold it.
Who maintains these systems? Everyone who benefits from them continuing. That list is longer than comfortable.
