False or inaccurate information, spread with or without intent, by people who are often very sure they are helping.
Misinformation exploits the gap between what the human brain finds satisfying and what is actually true. It does not require malice. It requires only a story that feels complete, arrives fast, and confirms something the receiver already suspected.
The lifecycle is roughly:
This process has been running uninterrupted since humans first had mouths.
"I saw it from three different sources." (The three sources were the same post, shared three times.)
ERR_CITATION_MISSING // "Everyone knows this"
ERR_SAMPLE_SIZE_ONE // "My uncle had the same thing"
ERR_CONFIDENCE_OVERFLOW // Certainty exceeds available evidence by 400%
ERR_CORRECTION_REJECTED // Update packet refused by receiving node
ERR_CONTEXT_STRIPPED // Statistic has escaped its denominator
WARN_SCREENSHOT_AS_SOURCE // Unverified image treated as primary document
Misinformation does not self-generate. It requires:
Remove all three and misinformation still runs. It just slows down.
Is misinformation the same as lying? No. Lying requires knowing the truth. Misinformation is often spread by people who are entirely sincere, which is what makes it structurally interesting and practically exhausting.
Why is it so hard to fix? Corrections require nuance, which is load-bearing but slow. False claims tend to be simple, confident, and emotionally resonant. In a distributed network optimized for engagement, simple and confident wins the race.
Who is responsible? All parties. No parties. This question is itself a known distraction from the more useful question: what do I actually know, and how do I know it?
