Information is not a thing. It is a relationship between a state and the set of states that could have existed instead. The more surprising a message, the more information it carries. This is not a metaphor. This is entropy, measured in bits.

Q: Is information physical? It is always instantiated in something physical. Whether it IS physical is the question that keeps certain departments employed.
Q: Can information be destroyed? Black holes have been arguing about this with quantum mechanics since 1974. Status: unresolved.
Q: What is the opposite of information? Not silence. Noise. Silence is a message. Noise is the absence of distinguishability.
