Golden Age

What it actually is

A period of time, always recently concluded, which everyone agrees was better than now, and which no one alive can fully verify.

How it works

A era ends, either by entropy, market forces, or simple boredom.
The people who lived through it begin forgetting the bad parts. This is not a bug.
Within one generation, the era acquires a warm amber tint in collective memory.
The phrase "back when things were simpler" enters circulation.
The golden age is now load-bearing infrastructure for approximately thirty percent of all political campaigns.

The cycle runs continuously. Every golden age contains, nested inside it, a smaller group of people mourning the previous golden age. It is golden ages all the way down.

Features

Infinite portability. Applies to cinema, jazz, comic books, the Roman Empire, network television, local diners, and your particular friend group circa 2009.
Self-sealing logic. Any evidence against the golden age is filed under "exceptions" or "you had to be there."
Emotional warmth. Genuinely useful. Do not remove.
Cross-platform compatibility. Works in every culture, every century, every timezone.

Known bugs

Cannot be accurately dated. Ask ten participants: get eleven date ranges.
Actively hostile to the present moment, which suffers by comparison through no fault of its own.
Tends to exclude the people who were not having a golden age during the same period. Women, frequently. Others, consistently.
Recursive invocation causes instability. If the thing you are nostalgic for was itself nostalgic for something earlier, your grief has no floor.

Edge cases

Occasionally, something really was better. This does not invalidate the bug report. It complicates it.
Childhood produces a golden age in almost every user regardless of actual conditions. This is a feature of childhood, not of the era it occurred in.
Some golden ages are being lived through right now by people who do not know it yet. They are busy complaining.

Should I try to return to it? The past does not accept incoming connections.
