The surface layer is a distraction. What runs the system is underground: mycorrhizal networks pass sugar, phosphorus, and what some researchers diplomatically call "chemical signaling" between trees. The correct mental model is less "collection of trees" and more "single organism that got too big and had to spread its compute across nodes."
Water enters via roots, exits via leaves. Carbon enters via leaves, gets locked into wood for centuries. Oxygen is a byproduct. The whole operation runs on sunlight and asks for almost nothing in return.
